The Spirit of Fiesta

Growing up in the Rey family means dance is a way of life. Eighteen-year-old Alina grew up watching her mother dance and instruct students at La Casa de la Raza for performances in Fiesta, and in 1998, she cheered on her older sister as the Fiesta’s chosen Spirit. And now it is her turn to shine.

Fiesta Equestrian Parade

Not long after dawn on the day of the Fiesta Parade (Fri., Aug. 3), trailers will start rolling onto the Pershing Park greensward. Hundreds of heads of prize horseflesh will be arriving. Stepping out onto the dewy morning grass will be big black Friesians that will be pulling La Presidenta Kelly Magne’s carriage.

Positively State Street

Timetable of Old Spanish Days

1782: King Carlos wished to establish a fortress to protect the new colony from foreign aggression. A wooden cross is raised on the site of the future Presidio de Santa Barbara (near present-day intersection of Canon Perdido and Santa Barbara streets) and blessed by Padre Junipero Serra. Lt. Jose Maria Ortega, first comandante, erects stockade to house the families of 36 soldiers, 70 officers, and nine Chumash Indians. Presidio will be the last of four built in New Spain (the others are in San Diego, Monterey, and San Francisco).

Police Chief Cam Sanchez Explains the Law’s View on Gangs

He has strong feelings about gangs and quite a bit of insight into that lifestyle. Sanchez consented to sit down and talk with Martha Sadler for the better part of an hour about gangs in Santa Barbara. What follows is an edited transcript of that conversation.
