Audio experts protest that the human ear can’t distinguish between original sounds and their digitized versions, such as a CD. If that’s so, how then have live performances remained the most stirring, the most immediate, and the most preferred way of hearing music? The West Coast Chamber Orchestra, choosing wisely to use the intimate Presidio Chapel to enhance the experience of the Bach and Vivaldi on its program, would disagree with the experts-its members know perfectly well that nothing can match the sound of live instruments.

Brother Ali’s The Undisputed Truth: With deeply funky beats and brilliant lyrics that call to mind the raspy delivery of Scarface, the latest from this albino Muslim rapper out of Minneapolis is the most powerfully political hip-hop release since Public Enemy. But it doesn’t get bogged down in despair, for Ali keeps the rhythm flowing and the tempo upbeat enough to bounce to.

Historic Home and Garden Tour

The ninth annual Pearl Chase Society’s Historic Homes Tour, which takes place this Sunday, May 20, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., will feature eight upper Eastside homes and a private garden. The homes featured this year were all built between 1904 and 1929, and represent a variety of architectural styles, including Craftsman, French Normandy, and Spanish Colonial Revival.
