While Native American culture has been embraced and celebrated within mainstream American cinema with great frequency and effect, Australia’s portrayal of its indigenous culture has, more often than not, found itself confined to the peripheral. But as indigenous characters have weaved their way through Australian cinema, one name has remained constant.

Hunting for Treasure

I cannot imagine a more pleasant treasure hunt than wandering through Santa Barbara and Goleta in search of art in unconventional spaces. My ongoing investigation of the region’s shops, restaurants, and coffee houses has convinced me that good art can do more than heighten the sensory experience of these locales; it can provide the frisson of finding a thing of beauty in an unexpected spot.

TDR Review Continues at Planning Commission

In a 4-1 vote last week, the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission acknowledged that a partial transfer of development rights (TDR) is feasible for the planned luxury home development on the Santa Barbara Ranch property.

Nava Secures Funding for 101 Expansion

Assemblymember Pedro Nava met with state leaders on 11/8 to secure state funding for phase one of the Highway 101 expansion project, which will take place between Milpas Street and Hot Springs Road.

Week Spot Photo – Glass Love

The Contemporary Arts Forum plays host to Glass Love: Contemporary Art and Surf. The exhibit features works by young artists who have drawn inspiration from surfing and surf culture, including Amy Bird’s “Surfers #1” (pictured above). An opening reception will be held at CAF (625 Paseo Nuevo) from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, November 17.
