Judy Nilsen’s Visual Wisdom at the Book Den

Just as the Book Den (15 E. Anapamu St.) intersects visual art and the written word by exhibiting artwork among its well-stocked bookshelves, so does Judy Nilsen’s Visual Wisdom, thus titled for its imaginative pairing of assemblage art with quotations, which graces the beloved bookshop’s walls through the month of November. Among the assemblage of reasons to take a peek:

A Message of Hope

Join McNair Ezzard for what promises to be an enlightening and informative free lecture this Saturday, November 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Public Library (40 E. Anapamu St.). HopeDance will host Ezzard as he speaks about the ongoing war, economic crises, environmental issues, and how we can change the world through everyday sharing, kindness, and solidarity. Ezzard is an ordained minister, healthcare administrator, a devout student of the teachings of ageless wisdom, and a Master of Wisdom.

Homage to a Font and a Fount

WHAT’S IN A WORD: Words do speak, and sometimes volumetrically. Take the word “Bauhaus.” No, not that stiff and pretentious English rock band, but the original German school for Modernist ideals and the integration of the arts and architecture, the manifesto for and output of which helped to push 20th-century aesthetics into high gear.

Common Sense Composers’ Collective

At one slightly startling point after his Robin Cox Ensemble premiered composer Carolyn Yarnell’s brand new work, event producer and composer Robin Cox casually asked, “Did we do okay?” It was a telling moment, and not awkward in the slightest. Here, after all, was a rare occasion, where an entire program of world premieres by mostly N.Y.C.-based composers was unfolding, in the invitingly intimate space of Contemporary Arts Forum.

StylePhile

The little blue box that makes ladies swoon: Yes, that little blue box. Tiffany & Co. is coming to Santa Barbara. At 3,400 square feet, the La Cumbre store will be enormous, not to mention enormously conveniently open for business on November 21, just in time for the holidays. Men, gird your loins!

The Walkmen

While I am a fan, I will admit I wasn’t terribly familiar with the Walkmen going into their show on Monday at SOhO. But from what I did know, their upbeat style and sound would surely not disappoint. And it didn’t.

Southland Tales

On paper, any work that faithfully re-creates the cultural components of a given point in time must inherently be good, in the sense of art imitating life. However, Southland Tales-Richard Kelly’s directorial follow-up to his cult hit mindbender Donnie Darko-ultimately fails to coalesce into a good film.

Author Adrian Butash Gives Thanks

Everyone likes to eat; in fact, everyone has to eat. Adrian Butash, author of Bless This Food, is no different in this regard. What sets him apart is his dedication to truly appreciating every meal for the blessing that it is, and giving thanks for the friends with whom he’s gathered-and not just on Thanksgiving Day.

Family Flick Night

La Cumbre Plaza is hosting a series of Family Flick Nights, featuring Saturday night fun for the whole family. The events get started at 4:45 p.m., with activities for kids provided by Kidz-Art, and the movies begin at 6 p.m. near Macy’s. Pizza Mizza will be available for purchase. This Saturday, November 17, stop by for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
