A compilation of the greatest acoustic players of bachata-a musical form developed in the Dominican Republic and first played on backyard instruments made from trashcans, fences, and even trash-this album reveals what the music was like before it got plugged in.

Common Sense Music

On Friday and Saturday, November 9 and 10, at 8 p.m., Santa Barbara’s Robin Cox Ensemble will be performing with the Common Sense Composers’ Collective, a San Francisco/New York City group that’s been dedicated to expanding music-making for the past dozen years.

Marlene R. Miller

The author of this week’s cover story, Marlene R. Miller, is a native of Austria. She settled in Santa Barbara in 1961, where she continued her career in banking for nearly 20 years. In 1980, she opened the Arlington Gallery, specializing in 19th- and 20th-century American and European art. Miller is the guest curator of Coloring the West, an exhibition of more than 40 watercolor and oil paintings by cowboy artist and beloved Santa Barbara figure Edward Borein, now on show at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. An acknowledged authority on Borein’s work, Miller is also a founding director of the Wildling Art Museum in Los Olivos and an independent curator.
