With all due respect to area scientists who have recently contended that daylight savings time doesn’t save energy, the season when the clock springs ahead an hour has another, deeper significance. That extra hour of sunshine in the early evening triggers changes in our habits that hit like lightning bolts that somehow magically stay all summer long. Thousands of years ago, Plato dreamt of an absolute sun that shone outside of the cave of mundane perception, a light of truth that, once seen, could not be forgotten and left those who saw it temporarily blinded, but forever unwilling to go back to a life defined by shadows.
