Shark Tales

Thu Jul 03, 2008 | 12:00am

In 1975, the film Jaws hit movie theaters, terrifying beach-goers with images of a people-eating shark. Swimming in the ocean was never the same carefree fun again. Now, however, there is a documentary that may just convince folks that sharks aren’t the fearsome creatures we’ve made them out to be. The winner of 22 international awards, filmmaker Rob Stewart’s Sharkwater “debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of their role as pillars in the seas’ evolution,” according to the press release. Stewart will answer questions following the screening, which is Wednesday, July 9, at 7:30 p.m. at UCSB’s Campbell Hall. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $5 for UCSB students.
