According to a news report from the San Diego Tribune, Barbara Warren, the 65-year-old triathlete from San Diego who broke her neck during the biking portion of the August 23 Santa Barbara Triathlon, died on Tuesday, August 26, at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. As the San Diego paper puts it, “There were no details of how the accident occurred.” Warren, who had been undergoing treatment at hospital’s intensive care unit following the crash, had broken both her odontoid bone and her C2 vertebra. She had been breathing with a ventilator and, though conscious, was paralyzed and communicating through blinking and nodding her head. Warren’s family told the Tribune that she wished to be taken off the ventilator.
