UCSB was ranked 18th in a list of colleges and universities that produced the most Peace Corps volunteers in 2008. It tied with UC San Diego. Both schools produced 49 volunteers traveling to 76 different countries this past year. George Foulsham, UCSB’s news director of public affairs, said he was constantly impressed with the volunteer spirit on campus – as evidenced by students’ strong showing in this list as well as other recent events, such as the November election. The Peace Corps organization began in 1961 when President Kennedy called on America’s youth to volunteer in developing countries. Since then, 1,472 UCSB alumni have become Peace Corps volunteers.
