The Santa Barbara City Council has reaffirmed its interest in contracting with a private company to install a new energy plant at the Tajiguas Landfill, using trash as the basic fuel to create new electricity and natural gas. Such a project could cost anywhere from $50 to $200 million, and would be done in conjunction with the County of Santa Barbara and the City of Goleta. Thus far, consultants have determined there are eight vendors capable of meeting such a contract; requests for proposal, however, have yet to be mailed out.
