Second Downtown Suicide Call in Just over a Week

A 65-year-old man committed suicide inside a private residence Monday morning, October 5, by shooting himself, according to police.

Authorities received a call around 10:45 a.m. of a suicidal man with a firearm in the 2000 block of State Street, near Padre Street. Just before police arrived, the caller heard a gunshot.

As a precaution, police shut down traffic on State Street in the area for 15 to 20 minutes, and eventually got a visual of the person inside the home, dead from what now appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Lt. Paul McCaffrey said.

This is the second downtown suicide in a little over a week. James Patrick McGuire, age 21, jumped off the Anapamu Street side of the Granada parking structure on September 27.
