Healthy for Life TV Shows

Whooping Cough and Immunization Focus of Early Episodes

Thu Aug 05, 2010 | 10:00am

August is National Immunization Awareness Month. To increase public awareness about the need for child, adolescent, and adult vaccination, and the ongoing whooping cough/pertussis epidemic in California, the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has produced new episodes of Healthy for Life and Una Vida Saludable focusing on vaccinations.

Healthy for Life and Una Vida Saludable are half-hour health education TV shows produced in English and Spanish by the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and the Santa Barbara Channels. The new vaccination shows include discussion of recommended vaccination schedules, myths and facts about vaccination, tips for keeping track of immunizations and for dealing with children’s fear of injections, and local resources for getting low-cost and free vaccinations, as well as a video demonstrating the whooping cough associated with pertussis. “We’re trying to get the word out about the importance of vaccinations. It’s especially critical this year in light of the whooping cough epidemic,” explained Scott McCann, PhD, County Health Education Director and coproducer of the shows.

The vaccination shows begin airing on Cox Channel 21 on Tuesday, August 10 at 7 p.m. (see show times below). Healthy for Life and Una Vida Saludable are also broadcast on Cox Channel 20 in southern Santa Barbara County, and on Comcast Channel 23 in central and northern Santa Barbara County. The shows will also be posted on the Health Department Web site.
