End Polio Now! Campaign by Rotary

Santa Barbara Sunrise Raising Funds and Awareness to End Polio

Wed Oct 06, 2010 | 10:06am

The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise is trying to raise funds and awareness to help END POLIO NOW. You may see their informational booth at the Farmer’s Markets and at other community events in Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Montecito, and Goleta.

David Velarde and Bob McPhillips, both members of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise.

This current campaign is to help us raise funds to match a grant awarded to Rotary by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In 1985 Rotary created its flagship program, PolioPlus, which became their effort to eradicate polio worldwide. At that time, there were 350,000 polio cases in 125 countries. Today, polio has been eliminated from all but four countries (Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan) and less than 2,000 cases were reported in 2008. This commitment to end polio represents the largest private-sector support of a global health initiative to date.

Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise meets at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Santa Barbara Club, 1105 Chapala Street
