S Expensive for Poor

Those who support a half-cent sales tax increase can afford it (those above the poverty level). However, it is a very regressive tax that unfairly impacts those on a low or limited income.

As absolutely all basic necessities of life that must be purchased (except for most food groceries) are taxed, many people on SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and SS (Social Security) are paying about five percent of their discretionary income on sales tax. That amount goes up along with the cost of living.

Wouldn’t it be better for those who support Measure S to pay “support the jail” tax, and/or use some of the county surplus; also the county may be able to budget more rigorously.

Although some sales tax will expire, the cost of living will overtake it, especially in the 14 years of Measure S.
