Spare the Incumbents

As the trustees not up for election on November 2, we do not agree with your endorsement editorial last week . We do not believe that the operation of Santa Barbara City College has been such as to merit the complete removal from office of the incumbents up for election, who constitute a majority of the board.

Santa Barbara City College is recognized by the Independent itself, in the first paragraph of your endorsement, as “one of the best community colleges in the United States.”

We believe that the existing operation of the college by the board of trustees and administration is, as a whole, excellent. We are proud that our budget is one of the few in balance at any level of government. We are pleased that giving to the college has continued in these tight budgetary times. We are pledged to continuing to work with the community to improve City College.

The incumbents Joe Dobbs, Des O’Neill, Kay Alexander and Sally Green have served Santa Barbara City College and the community well. We encourage their reelection. We also want to thank the challengers for a spirited campaign. We look forward to working effectively and constructively with whomever the community selects.

Morrie Jurkowitz, Joan Livingston, and Luis Villegas are Santa Barbara City College trustees
