Each year, thousands of homes across the country experience chimney fires due to improper maintenance of their chimney. The Santa Barbara County Fire Department reminds people that these fires can be prevented by making sure your flue is lined and in good repair, and by having it inspected and cleaned regularly by a professional chimney sweep.

The cause of most chimney fires is due to creosote build up which is a result of incomplete combustion of wood. This build up of creosote can be cut down by using your fireplace or wood stove properly. Build a hot fire. The hotter the fire, the more complete the combustion. Woods like oak, hickory, ash, or maple that have been seasoned for at lease a year burn the hottest.
