The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office accepted two prestigious awards today for a pair of programs that are being recognized for their innovation.

Each year, The California State Association of Counties bestows its Challenge Awards on the State’s most innovative County programs and the people behind them. This year, CSAC received nearly 250 program entries from California’s 58 counties. The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office was awarded two of only fourteen Challenge Awards given out for 2010 .

Operation Medicine Cabinet: The SBSO partnered with the Santa Barbara County Public Works Department to deliver this program that raises the awareness of the misuse of prescription and over the counter drugs, while also creating a convenient way to dispose of unwanted, unused medications.

Recycle a Bicycle Program: Santa Barbara County Jail inmates, enrolled in work programs, refurbish bicycles in the possession of the Sheriff’s Office that were seized, abandoned, or unclaimed. The refurbished bicycles are then donated to underprivileged children.

Sheriff Bill Brown joined SBSO personnel this morning in accepting the awards at today’s County Board of Supervisors meeting in Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara County also received three CSAC Challenge Merit Awards for the 2010 Census Multimedia Communications Campaign, EOC: in a Box: Innovation is King, and Radio Ready: Emergency Commercial Radio System.
