The proposed project to revive the upper arms of the Devereux Slough got a $1 million boost over the holidays, as the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service pledged the amount as part of a nationwide, $19 million grant program to fund coastal wetlands in 12 states.
The money will be used to acquire 63 acres of wetlands adjacent to the City of Goleta, a nearly $10 million project that’s being pursued as a partnership between the California Coastal Conservancy, the Trust for Public Land, the Fish & Wildlife Service, and UCSB’s Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration. In addition to the land acquisition, the project’s pricetag will cover the restoration of 13 acres of coastal wetlands and six acres of coastal uplands.
