Oh, The Places It Goes!

I sometimes think the trash companies know magic because they keep cities from smelling awful and tragic. Where do they manage to hide all that waste? Do they give anything to residents near the place? Does it smell worse where it costs less to live? Are we slowing the growth rate with our recycling sieve?

Two bits of knowledge on which I now gnaw are a fact I heard and an article I saw. The fact is that underneath our beloved Elings Park, waste is buried deep down in the dark. The article I read spoke of a Toxic Waste King and the fortunate permit his political donation did bring.

Knowing these things, I can’t help but wonder when hiding our waste will cause a blunder. Perhaps the truth is that it already has, but it isn’t often reported with pizzazz because we have yet to envision a better solution, though we imagine that it will feel quite Confucian.—Rachel Hoyt, S.B.
