How to Start Your Own Urban Homestead

Fri Mar 02, 2012 | 12:00am

• For advice on how to create your own urban homestead, Rachel Kaplan will be leading an Urban Homestead Design lab workshop for property owners and renters on Saturday, March 10, noon-4 p.m., $60-$75, at the Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens. The event is sponsored by Fairview Gardens and Santa Barbara Permaculture Network. For info, visit fairviewgardens.org.

• If you’d like to visit an urban homestead, one option is the Dervaes Gardens in Pasadena. This family-operated urban lot (1/10th of an acre) is a demonstration of this new/old lifestyle. Find them at dervaesgardens.com.

• To listen in on the doings of other urban homesteaders, check out these blogs: rootsimple.com, ramshacklesolid.com, or type “urban homestead” into your favorite search engine.
