Our columnist replies: “Getting this award is … well, you’re supposed to say ‘humbling,’ but it’s not that. It’s the opposite of that, in fact. It makes my head swell like a water balloon on a hose nozzle. It’s incredibly, dangerously unhumbling. So thank you for that.”

FINALIST: NICK WELSH

S.B. Radio Station

92.9 KJEE

What a long, strange trip this station has been on, though the Grateful Dead is way before its time. Since the mid 1990s when it mysteriously debuted, through its wandering through the formats gestation, and finally into its long, long, long local career as a hits-radio FM station primarily for the kids but obviously with a wider band appeal — or it wouldn’t win contests in this paper — KJEE has been rock-solid and clearly part of the vibrating waves that make up Santa Barbara’s cultural life.
