Dearth of Little Dogs in Montana

Wed Jan 16, 2013 | 06:00am

California shelters may be bursting at the seams with wee doggies, but that’s not the case in Montana. In fact, folks there are clamoring to adopt vertically challenged canines. The dearth came to light when Merlin, a Chihuahua being fostered at the Dog Adoption & Welfare Group (DAWG), was adopted by a family in Dillon, Montana. He was a hit, so DAWG’s Emily Grossheider put an ad on Craigslist promising transportation of small dogs from Cali to Big Sky Country if individuals and rescues could promise homes for them. Emails flooded in, and on February 7, Gossheider and Angela Adan, founder of Deserving Dogs Rescue and Rehabilitation, are driving east to deliver more than 16 shelter dogs to their new homes. The cost of the trip is significant, and the duo has set a goal to raise $4,000 by the time they leave. To help in their endeavor, send a check to DAWG with the memo “Merlin,” or donate online at sbdawg.org/donate. For more info, call (805) 681-0561.
