Poire de Deux

They’re only ornamental

But you wouldn’t know by looking at them.

Bright emerald leaves and white lace petals

Presented quite a show of fancy.

You could see they had practiced

In the secret moonlit evenings

Whenever the breeze had asked them to dance.

Whirling and twirling, heads spinning,

Leaves flicking to an unheard lunar tune.

Last night what a party they had!

No one heard a word,

But you could tell they had been raucous.

At morning light their confetti petals

Were strewn over the dance floor,

Leaving them as evidence

For us to trample as we strode the sidewalk

Wondering who drove home.
