Wheeler Brothers

Gold Boots Glitter

Wed Jun 05, 2013 | 06:00am

You immediately know the music on Wheeler Brothers’ second album, Gold Boots Glitter, is as old school as its pop-up album art. The packaging alone, which includes imagery of a man in a glitter fire, leaping sheep, and band members in eclectic costumes, is enough incentive to buy the physical album in this digital age. That these rockers hail from Texas shows in the inundation of twangy plucking and drawling vocals that show up throughout Gold Boots. But they expand beyond this by incorporating such eclectic sounds as xylophone, ukulele, and barbershop-style vocals. Sometimes they sound like Lynyrd Skynyrd gone dream pop (“Cigarette Smoke”), other times they play rollicking country rock like Johnny Cash without the grit (“Sleep When I’m Dead”). If one thing’s for sure, these Austin Music Award winners have officially outgrown their cowboy boots.
