Bass Drum of Death’s sophomore self-titled album falls in line with the recent garage-rock explosion helmed by such acts as Ty Segall and Black Lips. The band’s reverb-slathered “ooh”-ing (“Fine Lies”) is reminiscent of early Wavves. This similarity is increased in the shared themes of loneliness and ennui expressed in lyrics like “All of my friends, they’re all gone” and song titles like “Such a Bore.” Yes, much of the band’s feel-good energy, simplistic song structures, and murky distortion feel borrowed, but Bass Drum’s DGAF attitude comes off as totally genuine and totally rock ’n’ roll, brah.
