OPEN WIDE: Dancer Kaita Lepore performs in a recent NECTAR showcase.

In many ways, it’s the little performance project that could. When Cybil Gilbertson launched NECTAR back in 2009, her vision was simple: to foster and build community through art. The project itself proved to be slightly more complex. Together with a handful of friends and artists (Gilbertson herself was a dance major at UCSB), she began curating and presenting showcases that united dance, theater, music, film, visual art, and spoken-word performance around a single subject. Over the years those subjects have ranged from grief to suicide and violence to love, but the format has stayed the same.

On Saturday, September 14, NECTAR celebrates its fourth anniversary with a new showcase at Yoga Soup titled Open. Gilbertson is currently seeking artists interested in participating, and encourages all parties to submit their detailed ideas, video links, and still images to her via email at cybilleo75@hotmail.com. Submissions are due Thursday, August 1. For more about NECTAR, visit sbnectar.com.
