(Channel Islands)—On Tuesday August 5, 20 blind and visually impaired teens, selected from across Southern California, will become college students—not literally—but will get to experience one week of college life during this Summer’s Independence University.
The program is designed to give blind and visually impaired high school students exposure to college life and the steps they must take to get into the school of their choice. Independence University will begin on Tuesday August 5 to Friday August 9 at California State University, Channel Islands. “It is a great way to give these kids the confidence to take that first step from home into young adult hood,” said Bob Quakenbush, Youth and Career Services Director at Braille Institute, Santa Barbara.
During their time at Independence University, students will experience dorm living and the dining hall. They will also get to tour Cal State Channel Islands as well as two other local colleges. Students will have the opportunity to learn about campus Disabled Services, Financial Aid and Academic Expectations in College. Off campus activities are also included such as Kayaking, swimming, a museum trip and so much more!
