Guiding Cents

Budget! Budget! guiding cents

Out of sofas, drains, and vents,

What selfish, strong hand could choose

To spend the change that the poor lose?

If there’s less help for the hungry,

Scarce shelter at reduced cost,

And furloughed hot shots in our county,

Why would we steal what the poor lost?

No badge puts you out of reach

Or entitles you to more —

Pick-pocketing is one way to teach

The blind what’s happening to the poor.

Budget! Budget! guiding cents

Out of sofas, drains, and vents,

What selfish, strong hand could choose

To spend the change that the poor lose?

This quatrain poem was inspired by news and comments found here and here.
