Rape Culture is when grown men blame the victims of sexual assault instead of demanding accountability from the perpetrators. “Lads and Ladies” seems to indicate that we, as women, are responsible for the predatory and assaultive behavior of others while “Young men of college age are still at the peak of their biological urges, with development of their minds and values coming along later … or never.” The letter later cautions women to be sure to wear “clothing and makeup that are in good taste,” apparently in order to ward off young men who simply cannot be expected to control their urges.
I’m sure I’m not the only woman here who is tired of speaking out against these ignorant offerings. When will we, as a community, move past the ridiculous mentality that “boys will be boys” and acknowledge that sentiments like these are what keep Rape Culture alive?
