The fifth in her family to attend Westmont College — her parents met in a philosophy class — Sarah Sutherland is a writer. She talked with people from around the world during her internship last semester with San Francisco’s Not For Sale and wrote up their stories of surviving human trafficking. “It was very heavy,” she described, but she was enthusiastic about the nonprofit’s work and got into their marketing and events. “I wanted to try real journalism,” the Westmont senior then decided — she also edits music and video, writes screenplays, and has been working on a novel since she was 13 — and concluded, “It’s all about the storytelling,” a skill she’s employed in several dance and Living articles for The Indy. Our intern definitely gets straight As from us.
