JULY 12 THE SILK ROAD – Journey from China to Turkey
Journey with the world’s most traveled filmmaker, Marlin Darrah, as he explores the famous 4,000 mile trade route that winds through deserts, mountains and plains linking Europe to China. This program travels through five countries and two dozen cities. It presents an uncommon opportunity to see something of the world of Western China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.
JULY 19 LION – 2016 Australian Biographical Film
In 1986, five-year-old Saroo lives with his elder brother, Guddu; his baby sister, Shekila; and his mother in Khandwa, India. Guddu and Saroo steal coal from freight trains to trade for milk and food. Saroo cannot find his brother and falls asleep in an empty train car. The train takes him to Calcutta where, obviously, he cannot find his way back home. Adverse adventures follow, ending in an adoption by an Australian couple. After maturity, Saroo returns to India to search for his family.
JULY 26 CHILDREN OF HEAVEN – 1997 Iranian Film
Nine-year-old Ali fetches his six-year-old sister Zahra’s pink shoes after a cobbler has repaired them, and loses them on the way home. The events that follow from this event illuminate the trials and humanity of the poor living in Tehran at that time.
