Tamsen Gallery Hosts Renowned Photographer Susan Bridges “Inside Heaven’s Gate – Behind the Scenes with Susan Bridges”

The Tamsen Gallery is honored to host photographer Susan Bridges’ exhibition “Inside Heaven’s Gate – Behind the Scenes with Susan Bridges.” In 1979, Bridges was granted unparalleled access by Academy Award-winning director Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot), as well as the producer and cinematographer, to photograph the making of the movie Heaven’s Gate. As she described to Mike Powers (Whitefish Review) in an interview in 2023, “I was just around all the time – they forgot about me a little bit. I was able to go places that I wouldn’t have gone without my camera … I just went where I felt like going, where I thought there would be an interesting shot. It was so much fun.”

This allowed Bridges to capture, in a very personal and candid manner, the full scope of the experience of the making of the epic film. The breathtaking scenery and grand sets provided an amazing backdrop for her to shoot, and the film garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction-Set Direction.

In addition to Heaven’s Gate, Susan has worked as a special still photographer on several feature films including The American Success Company as well as the crime comedy Cold Feet starring Tom Waits, Sally Kirkland and Keith Carradine where she was an associate producer. Throughout her career she has photographed many iconic artists including Orson Wells, Clayton Moore (The Lone Ranger), Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bud Cort, Peter Fonda and the Los Angeles Ballet Company to name a few.

Her photographs have been published in numerous newspapers and magazines including the Los Angeles Times, Westways and Wet magazines and Whitefish Review and recently has been exhibiting her work to rave reviews. =

She has also collaborated with her husband and partner Jeff Bridges to launch a new company SilverBridges to revive the Widelux camera.

Join us at Tamsen gallery for this unique look into the world of filmmaking through Susan Bridges’ distinctive narrative lens. The exhibition opens at Tamsen Gallery at 1309 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101 on September 19^th, 2025, with special programs and artist talks planned throughout its run.
