Richard A. Yee
Richard A. Yee, a lifelong resident of Santa Barbara, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025. Born on November 23, 1958, he was the youngest son of James Thoon Yee and Katherine Grace Yee.
A proud Santa Barbara High School Don, Class of 1976, Richard earned his Business Management degree from the University of Michigan. He dedicated over 30 years to the Santa Barbara Police Department, later continuing as a Reserve Officer. Known for his compassion, humor, and fluency in Spanish, Richard met people where they were – with understanding, patience, and a genuine desire to help.
Beyond his service in uniform, Richard poured his heart into his community. He volunteered with SBPD’s DRAGG, the SB Unified School District, and the SBHS Band Boosters, where he inspired students and families alike. A lifelong lover of music, cars, and the outdoors, he found joy in the simple things – a good song, a coastal drive, or park day under the oaks. He cared deeply about protecting the environment, staying true to his Eagle Scout pledge to leave the world a little better than he found it.
He is survived by his children, James and Katherine; his wife Mary, his brother, Leonard; his godchildren; his beloved fur-grandkids, Willow and Forest and family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, November 19, 4-8 p.m. at McDermott-Crockett Mortuary, and a Mass will be held Thursday, November 20, 10:30 a.m. at San Roque Parish, followed by a Graveside service at SB Cemetery.
Richard will be remembered for his warmth, laughter, and his love of family and community, qualities that will continue to echo through the lives he touched.
