Dirty Folk, works by Lou Schad, opens May 2 from 4–7 PM at Fox Wine Co in the Funk Zone.
Lou Schad is a painter based on California’s Central Coast working under the name Dirty Folk. Her practice draws from close attention to the natural world, translating wild and foraged botanicals into paintings shaped by perception and memory.
Working directly with plant material and natural pigment, she builds surfaces through slow layering and responsive mark-making. These works hold shifting qualities of form over time, where softness, movement, and decay remain active within the image.
Rather than resolving into fixed depiction, the paintings reflect a sensitivity to transformation and material change, shaped by an ongoing engagement with the landscape.
Schad’s work invites sustained looking and a more attentive relationship to the natural world. Best experienced slowly, and perhaps alongside a glass of wine.
