Nestora Gonzalez
With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Nestora Gonzalez, affectionately known as Tola, who died peacefully in the home she loved so deeply on May 14, 2026, at the age of 88. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Her love and strength have shaped generations of her family.
Tola was born and raised in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. She was a strong presence within her family growing up in the green valley of San Francisco del Oro, a small mining town where she fondly remembered her family life and her father’s horse appropriately named “Horse”. She married Jose Gonzalez in 1957 with whom she spent the next sixty-four years together until his passing. They had five children which they raised in Santa Barbara, CA.
Tola exemplifies the heart of the immigrant dream, transforming her journey from Mexico to building a life rooted in hard work, sacrifice and devotion for her family. She dedicated thirty-five years of service to Cottage Hospital and after retirement continued giving back through her volunteer work as a cherished Pink Lady with the Cottage Cancer Foundation.
Tola was a passionate gardener who took immense pride in her orchids and hydrangeas. Her family fondly remembers her legendary green thumb; she could talk any withered plant back to life. Mom was the ultimate plant whisperer, famous for successfully nursing even the most stubborn species back to life.
Her home was a place of endless joy for her sixteen grandchildren, anchored by the comforting memory of a freezer always filled with Rocky Road ice cream, ready to welcome them.
Tola’s legacy will endure, and her spirit will continue to inspire those she touched. Hers was a life that proves that the American Dream is not just about what you achieve, but what you give back. She leaves behind a proud family who will forever miss her and will carry her lessons of resilience, determination, and endless generosity.
Tola is survived by her children Icela Gonzalez, Olivia G. Rodriguez, Irma Gonzalez-Sevilla (Edgar), Arturo Gonzalez, and Jesus Gonzalez Jr. (Yolanda) and stepdaughters Maria Placencia (Moises), and Alicia Rios (Jose).
The family is grateful for the kind and generous support provided by the caring staffs of both VNA Hospice of Santa Barbara and Sharp Hospice of San Diego.
