Chamber On The Mountain presents
Hui Wu, Pianist
with Special Guest Artist, Veteran Joo Kim
Program:
Philip Glass – Wichita Vortex Sutra with Allen Ginsberg’s poem recited by Guest Artist, Veteran Joo Kim
Philip Glass – 10 Etudes, Book I
Frédéric Chopin – 12 Etudes, Op. 25
The Vision
This program juxtaposes two cornerstones of the piano repertoire: the complete Op. 25 Etudes of Frédéric Chopin and the 10 Etudes of Philip Glass (Book I). By pairing these cycles, the program explores the “Etude” as both a technical laboratory and a high-art form, tracing the line from Chopin’s 19th-century chromaticism to Glass’s 21st century minimalism.
This performance is underwritten, in part, by the Monimos Foundation.

About Hui Wu:
Hailed by The New York Times for her “sparkling” artistry, pianist, composer, and creative producer Hui Wu reshapes the classical concert into a multidimensional experience. Rooted in both contemporary and classical repertoire, she moves effortlessly between the concert-hall piano and the majestic pipes of a centuries-old cathedral organ. In addition to her international performance career, Hui is a sought-after teacher and visionary educator.
With the upcoming release of her album of music by Philip Glass, Hui continues to champion modern and contemporary works through performances that include a World Premiere with Raiford Rogers Modern Ballet—where her playing and musical direction became an integral part of the choreography—and chamber collaborations with Martin Chalifour, Rainer Honeck, Stefan Dohr, and Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson.
Hui is an acclaimed global artist, featured at prestigious festivals and concert halls around the world, including the Taos School of Music, Yellow Barn Chamber Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, PianoTexas, and the Beijing International Music Festival and Academy. She has collaborated with leading orchestras such as the Salzburg Philharmonics, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the New Juilliard Ensemble, and has appeared at renowned venues including Walt Disney Concert Hall and Lincoln Center’s Tully Scope Festival.
As a composer and advocate for new music, Hui has created works performed in collaboration with The Juilliard School’s Dance Division and premiered compositions by leading contemporary composers such as Chad Cannon, Matthew Aucoin, Du Yun, Huang Ruo, Chen Yi, Jeffrey Parola, Eric Nathan, Paul Chihara, and Elliott Schwartz.
Born in China, Hui began piano studies at age four and gave her debut recital at thirteen in GuangDong Concert Hall performing all twelve Chopin Études. She earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The Juilliard School, both on full scholarship, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the USC Thornton School of Music, studying with Jing Song Xian, Matti Raekallio, Jerome Lowenthal, Stewart Gordon, Philip Lasser, and Donald Crockett. She is also a prizewinner of numerous competitions—including the Kosciuszko Chopin Competition, the Murray Dranoff International Artists Competition, the Beverly Hills National Auditions, the Ettlingen International Competition, the Steinway International Piano Competition, the Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund Award, and the Golden Clock Piano Competition in China.
Hui has served as Southern Festival Chair for the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT) and is a frequent adjudicator for competitions across the United States. She currently teaches at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts, Moorpark College, Cal Lutheran University, and Junior Chamber Music. A visionary educator, she independently designed and launched a fully supported online collegiate piano curriculum years before such programs became commonplace.
Hui calls Los Angeles home where she shares her life with her loving family and three cheeky cats, all of whom treat the Steinway piano like their personal sofa.
About Joo Kim:
Joo Kim is a U.S. Army veteran and a life-long lover of classical music. Particularly fond of choral music, he has had the pleasure of performing many beloved works – such as Requiem (Duruflé), Mass in C Minor (Mozart), and Lux Aeterna (Lauridsen) – with his college and community choirs.
Originally hailing from South Korea, Joo now calls the Pacific Northwest his home. When not fighting digital villains in the cyberspace, Joo enjoys reading biographies, taking long strolls, and playing crosswords with his beloved wife.
