Kathryn “Tata” Castagnola
Kathryn “Tata” Castagnola, 98, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by loved ones, on July 5, 2026.
Kathryn was born on July 31, 1927, in Vancouver, Washington, to Harold and Eleanor McClellan. She was raised in Santa Barbara, where she attended parochial schools and developed the deep faith, warmth, and devotion to family that guided her throughout her life.
In 1945, Kathryn married Mike Crowell. Together they welcomed three daughters: Christine, Rhonda, and Marsha. They later divorced in 1953. In 1955, Kathryn met and married Lawrence “Jackson” Castagnola. Their marriage brought two more children, Maureen and Timothy, and together they built a family filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories.
Kathryn’s sparkling eyes were a window to her kind soul. Her gift for finding humor in even the ordinary moments, along with the sound of her unmistakable laughter filling the house, ensured that no one ever left her home without a smile.
Her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a loving, encouraging, and supportive grandmother who took great interest in their lives. She devoted much of her time to helping them pursue their education, reach their goals, and become the people they hoped to be. She taught by example the importance of kindness, forgiveness compassion and family.
Kathryn was a devout Catholic whose faith was central to her life. She attended daily Mass and was a devoted parishioner of Old Mission Santa Barbara, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, volunteered in the parish office, and faithfully helped with fundraising events. She was also instrumental in encouraging and assisting several young men on their path to the priesthood. Kathryn later served as a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, where she also attended prayer groups. In her later years, she became a member of San Roque Church.
An avid reader, Kathryn especially enjoyed British mystery novels and was a devoted fan of Agatha Christie. Often finishing a book a week, she looked forward to her regular visits to the public library.
Kathryn lived a remarkable 98 years and will be remembered for her quiet generosity, her service to her church and community, and her deep love for the people in her life. To all who were fortunate enough to know her, Kathryn brought comfort, joy, and a genuine sense of welcome.
Kathryn is survived by her children: Christine Swanson, Rhonda Crowell, Marsha Holland, Maureen Castagnola and Timothy Castagnola; her grandchildren: Mark Swanson, Morgan, Daniel, Nico, Ellianna, Emma, Skyla, Coralie, and Cecily Castagnola; her great-grandchildren: Katy, Ryan, Greg, Kelly, and Paul Swanson, and Riley Zuzinec; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, sister Mary Mora, and brothers Bob and Tom McClellan.
A Funeral Mass will be held at San Roque Church Sept. 16 at 10:30 a.m., followed by a reception at Harry’s Plaza at 11:30. Family graveside services will be on Sept 17th at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Monastery of Poor Clares.
