During his adolescence he attended Goleta Union School, Santa Barbara Junior High, Santa Ynez High and New Mexico Military Institute.

After his service he was involved in the Family Ranching and Wildlife Management Business. He then attended and graduated from Santa Barbara City College, received a B.A., from San Diego State University and a Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego.
