2026 SBIFF Social Justice Award & Reception: An Evening with Amy Goodman, in Conversation with Ryan Cruz
February 7 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Now more than ever, The FUND believes in the power of film and independent media to shape our understanding of the world and engage our hearts and minds in the pursuit of justice. As journalists face increasing threats and retaliation for bearing witness and telling the truth, the role of a free and fearless press is ever-more essential to a healthy democracy.
In that spirit, we are proud to announce that this year’s Santa Barbara International Film Festival Social Justice Award winner is Steal This Story, Please!, directed by filmmakers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, which follows the life and work of renowned investigative journalist and Democracy Now! host, Amy Goodman.
Undeterred by armed soldiers, smooth-talking politicians, and riot police, journalist Amy Goodman has reported some of the most consequential stories of our time. Steal This Story, Please! is a gripping portrait of the trailblazer whose unwavering commitment to truth-telling spans three decades of turbulent history. From the frontlines of global conflict to the organized chaos of her daily news program Democracy Now!, Goodman amplifies stories and voices routinely silenced by commercial media.
The FUND will host Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! in conversation with local Santa Barbara Independent journalist, Ryan Cruz, at our reception. We hope you will join us! Light appetizers and libations will be served. A suggested donation of $20 is requested.
The Social Justice Film Series at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, sponsored by The Fund for Santa Barbara, presents a slate of films that engage community and galvanize change to advance Economic, Environmental, Political, Racial or Social Justice.
Space is limited; RSVP Required.
