Beyond the Mountains and the Seas: Eurasion History through Travelers’ Eyes (400 BCE – 1936 CE) with Professor Anthony Barbieri
Sunday, February 22, 2026
2:00 PM at Night Lizard Brewing
Join us as Professor Barbieri narrates the integrated history of Eurasia over the last two millennia through the travel of two dozen remarkable men and women who voyaged across this vast continent and reported on their encounters with a foreign culture.
His talk argues that, despite increasing empirical knowledge gathered about the “other,” mental projections of the “monsters at the edge of the world,” still colored peoples’ perception of the foreign “other” well into the modern era.
Anthony Barbieri is Professor of Early Chinese History at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
He received his PhD from Princeton University in 2001.
He specializes in the economic, social, legal, and material culture history of Early China.
He has published books on Chinese law, the social history of artisans, a comparison between Ancient Egypt and Early China, and interpretations of the First Emperor (The Many Lives of the First Emperor of China, Univ. of Washington Press, 2022).
His most recent book, Parallel Journeys (Cambria Press, 2025) is an anthology of Eurasian travel accounts in a global historical framework.
