UC Berkeley Distinguished Professor of Astronomy Alex Filippenko, Ph.D., started as a student member of the Santa Barbara Astronomy Club* in the 1970s. Join us to learn about Dr. Filippenko’s life in astrophysics, inspired by his early experiences with the club. He’ll describe highlights of his research on exciting topics like exploding stars, black holes, galaxies, and the accelerating expansion of the universe.
Filippenko, a native of Goleta, fondly remembers attending many SBAC monthly meetings and star parties. An elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and one of the world’s most highly cited astrophysicists, he has also contributed extensively to public education in astronomy. Voted Best Professor on the UC Berkeley campus a record nine times, in 2006 he was named the National Professor of the Year. He has produced five video courses, coauthored an award-winning astronomy textbook, and appears in more than 120 TV documentaries. He enjoys world travel and experiencing total solar eclipses (20, so far).
