Chaucer’s Books (3321 State Street) a storytime sharing of We Were Here, We Are Here: A Living History of Black Santa Barbara with author Simone Ruskamp and illustrator Reyna Harris.
As part of this special event, Chaucer’s Books will be donating 10% of all sales from 1:30 – 3:30pm to Healing Justice Santa Barbara.
Description
Come along on a walk through Santa Barbara as poet laureate Sojourner Kincaid Rolle tells us about the rich Black history in our city. Readers join a walk with Santa Barbara youth as they learn more about their ancestors’ history, and Mrs. Sojourner relives her own experiences as she shares them with the community.
About the Author and Illustrator
Author Simone Akila Ruskamp (she/her) is a Black woman who loves Black people. She is a co-founder of Healing Justice Santa Barbara and the mother of two young children. Read her full bio at https://www.hjsb.org/. Healing Justice Santa Barbara is a Black-founded and Black-led non-profit based in California. Healing Justice Santa Barbara aspires to uplift all Black/African-Americans to affirm they are deserving of safety, love, equity, respect, and joy.
Illustrator Reyna (Iman) Harris is an artist and illustrator from Santa Barbara, California. Through bold, vivid colors and expressive characters, her work shines a light on the often dimmed topic of mental health and celebrates the beauty of Black people and Black culture.
