Ishmiel is our Minister of Music this Sunday! He says, “For my next ecstatic dance set I endeavor to create a musical environment that invites sanctity and celebration.
Lately, I have been noticing just how uninitiated our culture is. We have so few road maps to tell us where we are going, or how to get there. Many of us don’t even know our Great Grandparents names or where our family comes from. Often we spend more time interacting with each other through screens than in person. This has created an environment of separation where we mistakenly feel that we have to do life all on our own.
Our Tribe is only 10 years old but dancing together goes back to the beginning of our humanity. It’s as natural to us as the rhythm of our beating hearts. When I’m dancing with my community I feel like “We are doing this together!” For me, that is our holy ground right now. I feel privileged to be creating the musical journey for this dance because I cherish the container we have co-created.”
Minister of Music Ishmiel co-founded Dance Tribe and has been in the ecstatic dance scene for over 20 years. “Music and dance take us the right to the present moment,” he says. “Through ecstatic dance, we can let go of our worries and express a true and authentic part of ourselves.” He creates sets that invite dancers to move from a deep internal place to a celebratory ecstatic high and finally to a quiet, grounded stillness. He fuses music from around the world.
