As part of the celebration of Black History Month, the UCSB Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jon Nathan, welcomes saxophonist and New Orleans native and resident DEREK DOUGET. Mr. Douget will present two public performances and engage with students in jazz classes at UCSB, as well as work with individual student saxophonists, combos, and jazz improvisers.

Tuesday February 11 at 7:00 PM at SOHO Restaurant and Music Club (1221 State St STE 205, Santa Barbara, CA) and will feature a small group performance by saxophonist Derek Douget with students and faculty from UCSB’s Jazz Ensemble, including ensemble director Jon Nathan (drums) and Matt Perko (drums and combo coach), with students Megan Etzel (piano), Lucian Mahan (trumpet), Erik Beahrs(tenor saxophone) and LIam Ronarch (bass). Music to be performed includes works by Wayne Shorter, Nicholas Payton, New Orleans legends Ellis Marsalis and Harold Batiste, and of course Derek Douget. Derek Douget is a Grammy award winning saxophonist who has been a professional on the New Orleans music scene for over 20 years. Douget was born and raised in Gonzales, Louisiana and moved to New Orleans to attend the University of New Orleans where he earned a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies. In 2010, Douget became The Music Education Coordinator for the Jazz and Heritage Foundation and where he oversees the Don “Moose” Jamison Heritage School of music and is also an Adjunct professor at the University of New Orleans. Derek has been a member of the Ellis Marsalis Quartet for over twenty years and has performed with: Nicholas Payton, Doctor John, Elvin Jones, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Wyclef Jean, Mulgrew Miller, and many others.
