Join us in celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to the Chilean poet, Gabriela Mistral.
Mistral lived in Santa Barbara from 1946-1948 and purchased a home on East Anapamu Street close to the high school.
The event seeks to highlight not only Mistral’s work as a writer, but also her role as an educator, diplomat, and human rights advocate.
The program will include welcome remarks by Chilean General Consul, Mr. Francisco Leal Lisboa; a biographical video about Gabriela Mistral by the Gabriela Mistral Foundation; and a brief lecture on Mistral’s life and work while residing in Santa Barbara by Víctor F. Fuentes, an emeritus professor at UCSB and specialist in 19th- and 20th-century Spanish literature and culture.
The program will conclude with a reading in English and Spanish of two poems Gabriela Mistral wrote while living in Santa Barbara, one of them specifically written for the City by Mistral.
Program Sponsors: Chilean Consulate in Los Angeles, CA. Gabriela Mistral Foundation, Office of the Governor of IV Region of Chile, Santa Barbara High School, Santa Barbara Poets Society, City Hall Santa Barbara, Chile California Council, Chilean Community in Santa Barbara.
