Ventura County artist Laura Rasey Miller shares a series of picture book illustrations from her self published children’s book, Night of the Cricket. August 22-24 at The Community Arts Workshop in Santa Barbara.

Artist reception/book signing Saturday, August 23rd, 3-6pm. There will be a reading of the book Sunday, August 24th, at 1pm in the gallery. The show presents both color illustrations and black and white giclée print panels that tell the story.

Night of the Cricket is the story of a brave cricket who refuses to become a meal and sets out with determination to control his own destiny.

After a young boy drops a cricket into his tank of pond frogs, one little cricket escapes, only to encounter more creatures who could harm him on his journey to freedom and expression. It is a night of unforeseen obstacles, but the cricket remains steadfast in his desire to create music under the stars. In his unflinching determination, the cricket reminds us all that we have the power to change our destinies.

Laura uses vibrant gouache and pen and ink. Through patterns, lines, and textures, she aims for readers to accompany the little cricket on his journey to freedom, discovering beauty in the everyday world around us.

Laura Rasey Miller is a fine artist with a foundation in illustration and design. She is a lifelong resident of Camarillo and has participated in group and solo shows in Ventura County for over 35 years.

Night of the Cricket is her first book.

Her youngest son had a menagerie of pets when he was growing up. Often, after feeding crickets to their pet geckos and tarantula, they would release a few of the crickets in their yard.

This was the inspiration for Night of the Cricket.
