What happens when a 1930s radio acting troupe, ably supported by the Harvey Shapinsky Oriental Orchestra, concocts a version of the science fiction adventure serial Flash Gordon for the station’s ethnic music hour? You get “Fleisch Gordon and the Space Amoeba of Doom!”
Fred Nadis’s script for this dramatized broadcast reimagines the 1930s series as filtered through the imagination of the Yiddish immigrant mind, as Fleisch and comrades: Doktor Zarkov; his brilliant daughter Margot; her posthuman fiancé Herbert; Margot’s nemesis, the power hungry Vilma Slooze; and the Rabbi of the Asteroid—battle not only the approaching Space Amoeba, but the disturbing side-effects of intergalactic brain worms that Slooze distributes to boost mind power.
From Shtetl Home Companion, the same group that brought you “I Married a Golem!” and with the same mix of vaudeville silliness, original music, songs, and semi-serious themes.
Overseeing the madness is master storyteller Michael Katz as the Narrator.
Suggested audience 12+. Tickets $20, available at the door only.
Shows on November 9 at 3 pm and 6 pm at the Covarrubius Adobe at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, 136 E De La Guerra Street, Santa Barbara.
