It’s a pretty well-known, widely accepted truth that the quickest way to a reporter’s heart is through her stomach. Booze and caffeine are important, of course, but at The Indy, we set our clocks to the free food schedule. Some may call it bribery, but the fact remains that we’re all here on deadline days, fingers fueled by pizza, bagels, and burgers and fries (that’s Tuesday noon, Wednesday 8 a.m., and Wednesday noon, respectively).

The Junior Spirit of Fiesta
Marissa Cordero might only be 10 years old, but she knows she has what it takes to be the Junior Spirit of Fiesta. “I have sassiness and spunkiness. So I think that’s why I won,” she said. Chosen over 19 other girls who auditioned for the role, Marissa said she was inspired to start dancing by her mother, who once auditioned for Spirit of Fiesta, and her great-grandmother, who danced in the first Fiestas of Santa Barbara.
G. Love & Special Sauce Prepare to Headline the Bowl
With airy instrumentals and carefree lyrics, G. Love & Special Sauce could almost pass for Santa Barbara natives. But while its untroubled philosophies might be at home on the West Coast, the band has proud roots in Philadelphia, where front man Garrett Dutton formed the band as a duo in 1992.
Queen Latifah is Dana Owens
Look for a date to be announced soon for the November appearance by none other than Queen Latifah at the Arlington, performing under her jazz singer (and real, given) name, Dana Owens. The concert, which is being presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures, will feature songs from Latifah/Owens’s new record, Trav’lin’ Light, which will be in stores on September 25.
