Although it sounds like a cliché, it is true that the high school years can be the toughest times of a person’s life. There is something about teenagers and their unique insecurities that make them judgmental and harsh towards those they perceive as being even the slightest bit different. OUT FOR THE LONG RUN is a documentary that focuses on the gay athlete. In addition to interviews with gay Olympic and professional athletes, the film delves into the lives of three young male athletes who have made the transition from inside the closet to outside of its doors. The young men, each so insightful and self-aware, tell the stories of their coming out and describe the aftermath with regard to friends, teammates, and family. Torchbearers of a marginalized group, these young men share their aspirations for both their lives and the world around them, hoping to change preconceived notions along the way.
