King's Road

Directed by Valdís Óskarsdóttir | ICELAND | 2010 | Subtitled

Valdís Óskarsdóttir, the editing genius behind ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, returns to direct KING’S ROAD with the same bag of eccentric tricks up her sleeve. Set in the rural trailer-park town of King’s Road, Iceland, this comedy centers on a batch of quirky characters and their head-scratching relationships with one another. When Junior (Gísli Örn Gar_arsson) returns to his hometown with his stoic friend, Rupert (Daniel Brühl), he is looking for a simple handout from his uninterested and unloving father, Senior (Sigur_ur Sigurjónsson), but finds much more. He begins to see the town’s misfits not as the losers they seem to be, but as caring, aware, and real people punched by the bitter fist of Iceland’s economic downturn. A contemporary story of the prodigal son returning to his place of birth, KING’S ROAD is an authentic portrayal of modern day Iceland and its people, with a unique twist of bitterness, humor, and hope. - Julia Speace
